On March 18, 1965, the whole world looked spellbound towards the Soviet Union. Because on this day the first space exit took place and was one of the most important events in the space race. Cosmonaut Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov left the protective lock of the Voskhod 2 spacecraft for 12 minutes and was the first person in space. When the capsule returned home, however, there were problems with the automatic landing systems. The commander of Voskhod 2, Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev, had to manually steer the capsule towards Earth, which was very dangerous. Although the capsule missed its intended landing site and landed in difficult terrain in the Ural Mountains, the two cosmonauts were in good health and the mission was a complete success. Leonov wore a Sturmanskie watch during the entire mission and also during the spacewalk. The Open Space series is dedicated to this event and the two cosmonauts.
