Even the first models of this category had an important function, the determination of geometric length. This made it possible for the first time to determine the longitude very precisely and thus to determine the position on the high seas very precisely. The longitude was determined by the exact measurement of the current time at a certain point (whose longitude is known), this value was compared at a second point (whose longitude had to be found out) by reading the current time of day via the chronometer and calculating the longitude of the second point of view. If there is a time difference of four minutes, the longitude is changed by exactly one degree.
