The term glass refers to different amorphous solids. The majority of glasses are mainly made of silicon oxide, such as drinking and window glasses. There are a large number of techniques for glass production, as different types of glass are used for various purposes.
The properties of glass are wide-ranging. Because by adding various chemicals, for example, so-called frosted glass can be produced. This has the well-known turbidity and is usually relatively opaque, i.e. hardly translucent. In most cases, the subsequent use determines the chemical composition of the glass. Window glass and similar glass are of course translucent. However, it is possible to color glass, for drinking glasses, decorative items made of glass or similar.
According to history, glass has been around for over 9000 years. It is not known exactly when glass was actually produced for the first time. However, there are finds from the Stone Age. These date from around 7000 BC. Jewellery and small glass vessels were made in Egypt from around 3000 BC. Since then, many manufacturing processes have been developed, some of which are still used today. Very impressive is the glass blowing, which is still used today for the production of artistic-decorative objects.
Of course, watchmakers have also become aware of the versatility of glass and have developed wall clocks, pendulum clocks and also table clocks made of glass. For example, there are watches made entirely of glass, or material combinations such as glass and metal or wood. The world-famous AMS brand also manufactures glass kitchen clocks. Due to its great features, glass is very variable in terms of design. As a result, there are no limits to the imagination of the watch designers when it comes to design.
