An alarm clock is a clock that will awake a person from sleep at a previously set time or remind them of a certain date. This is usually done by means of an acoustic signal. Today, an alarm clock is much more than that. It serves as a stylish eye-catcher and as an accessory in the bedroom.
The Wake-Up Signals in Former Times
For a long time, clocks were luxury items. For the majority of the population, sleep ended when it became light or when the rooster crowed. The few, who had to get up before dawn, were wakened by the night watchman.
However, clocks with an additional alarm function are just as old as mechanical clocks, that is, since the 14th century. From ancient times, descriptions of water clocks have been obtained, in which the water level in a vessel indicated the time. In this case, floats could be inserted into the vessel, triggering bells or figures at a certain filling height via a lever. In the monasteries of the 12th century, alarm clocks with bell signals were used as reminders for the observance of the prayer times.
Nowadays, especially the young people set a wake-up call with their mobile phones or smartphones. The mobile phone is usually reachable around the clock anyway, so it can quickly be grabbed. When charging the battery at night, the mobile phone often lies next to you on the nightstand. Therefore, the alarm clock on the phone has proven to be very practical.
In spite of all this, for many people the classic alarm clock remains, because it does not have to be recharged and it needs no further attention. Some choose the practical variant, others like a cool eye-catcher on the nightstand.
One of these eye-catchers is our clock of the week.

The nimble black wooden block, which apparently does not look like an alarm clock, has an alarm function on the back. It’s right there where the battery is inserted. A USB cable is also included. The Arabic white digits are shining in the digital time display through the black wooden dial. This is definitely something special!
