The Traditional Cuckoo Clock
Traditionally, the cuckoo clock is mainly manufactured in the Black Forest. It has gained worldwide recognition. A cuckoo clock is usually a wall clock with a mechanical pendulum system that is equipped with a chain hoist and a striking mechanism. Since mid-19th century, the basic shape of the casing has mostly been modeled after a railway house with a pitched roof and decorated with more or less elaborately carved wooden ornaments. However, the actual specific, eponymous feature of the cuckoo clock is the striking mechanism. A mechanical cuckoo is used as an acoustic time signal; the cuckoo is movable and is mounted in the casing above the dial behind a flap that resembles a little door – and usually the cuckoo appears at every full hour. Depending on the design, the mechanical cuckoo – traditionally carved from wood and painted, but today usually made of plastic – moves to match the cuckoo call or even opens the beak accordingly.
In addition, one or more cuckoo calls are played at the full hour, depending on the time of day (full hours are counted), usually together with a gong. The „cuckoo call“ is traditionally created by a pair of differently tuned organ whistles inside the clock. In addition, other movable decorative elements may adorn the outside of the clock.
The Modern Variant of the Traditional Cuckoo Clock
The AMS 7287 has a very modern and cute design compared to the traditional cuckoo clocks. It has a lacquered wooden casing in anthracite. Unlike the many traditional dark brown wall clocks made of walnut, this cuckoo clock was designed with a modern coloring. Furthermore, it does without all the old-fashioned decorations and ornaments on the wooden housing. This cuckoo clock is painted white with a tree and leaves. A white plastic bird appears at every hour. There is also an alternative red bird in the package. The cuckoo call also sounds at every full hour. To make sure it doesn’t disturb you at night, there is an automatic night shutdown and volume control. In addition, the wall clock has black Arabic numerals and red hands.
AMS 7286
There’s also a variant available by the manufacturer AMS. This is made of a white lacquered wooden casing with an anthracite-colored tree. The red bird appears at every full hour, but an alternative white bird is included, too. It also features a red pendulum and red Arabic numerals.
